In a book that could have easily been bogged down in the heavy issues it deals with (race, violent crime, homelessness, and division between classes), Salcedo manages instead to seamlessly navigate us through a fast paced love story. "Red from Green," for example, features a lawyer and his brother and daughter who take a potential witness in a workplace civil suit on a rafting and hunting trip, in an effort to convince him to testify; the brothers are oblivious of the man's designs on the fifteen-year-old girl. A sensitive and heart warming story, a little slow at times but not enough to inteferewith a good read. They are so good that they make it difficult to review other books. Shefchik dares the reader to accept the premise that a thrown Series from very recent memory might be possible (don't worry, Sox fans, all characters on the field or in the front office are wholly fictional), and carries it off with a narrative deftly seasoned with baseball lore.
